To get us started, mineral balancing with HTMA helps us fine-tune your diet to match your body’s current needs and see your current biochemistry.
In simple terms, **biochemistry** is the study of how the chemistry inside our bodies helps us function. When it comes to the work I do with HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) and mineral balancing, we’re looking at how different minerals in your body interact and affect your health on a deeper level.
Think of it like this: your body is like a car, and biochemistry is all about the fuel and how the engine runs. Minerals are part of the fuel that keeps your body’s engine running smoothly. For example, minerals like sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium play important roles in everything from energy production to stress management and even how your cells communicate with each other.
When we analyze these minerals through HTMA, we’re basically checking your body’s internal chemistry to see how well it's working. If certain minerals are too high or too low, it can disrupt your "biochemistry," leading to issues like fatigue, stress, or poor metabolism.
So, biochemistry in this work is about understanding the chemical processes that are going on inside you and using that knowledge to bring your body back into balance by adjusting your nutrition, lifestyle, and supplements. It’s about giving your body the right tools (in the form of nutrients) to heal and function better.
Some of you may wonder how we make these dietary tweaks based on HTMA test results.
Well, here's the deal: while food gives us nutrients, it’s not just about what we eat. Whether our bodies actually use those nutrients depends on things like our nervous and endocrine systems, which control digestion, absorption, and how we process nutrients.
First, we look at your metabolic type using HTMA. This helps us figure out how your body is functioning, and which foods will best support you. Each person’s needs are different, so we customize recommendations for you.
Now, a lot of this boils down to how well your cells are making energy. If you’re in a slower metabolic state (parasympathetic dominance), you’ll need lean proteins and plenty of plant foods to kick-start energy production. If you’re in a faster metabolic state (sympathetic dominance), getting satiated with a balance of healthy fats, denser proteins (including organs) with plenty of fiber rich plants will help slow things down and balance your system.
It’s also important to note that certain foods can affect your metabolism based on their natural compounds. For example, foods high in thiocyanates (like broccoli) can slow thyroid function, while others, like those high in phytates (found in grains), can boost your metabolism. Even the mineral content in foods matters—someone with a zinc-copper imbalance might need to reduce certain foods like soy, which can throw things off even more.
At the end of the day, the dietary recommendations provided aren’t random nor are they a long term all or nothing approach—they’re designed to meet your specific nutritional needs to get your cells working properly again.
Of course there is always some nuance to all of this depending on each person but it’s helpful to think in terms of correcting these imbalances through supportive compounds so you can make diet tweaks customized to you instead of getting nowhere from trying all the latest fad diets or possibly getting worse.
Metabolic type or oxidation rate
How we determine your metabolic type through HTMA testing and why it’s so important for your health. Let me explain it in a way that makes sense.
Your metabolic type, also called your oxidation rate, shows how your body is processing food and releasing energy. Oxidation is just a fancy word for how your body “burns” food using oxygen to create energy—kind of like how wood burns in a fire. This process can happen at different speeds, and that’s where your metabolic type comes in.
Fast vs. Slow Metabolism/ Oxidation
If you’re a **slow oxidizer**, your body is burning fuel too slowly. Imagine a wood stove with a tiny fire that’s not warm enough to heat the room. Slow oxidizers tend to have exhausted thyroid and adrenal glands, which means they’re running low on energy. To fix this, we focus on giving you the right nutrients to “stoke the fire” and get your metabolism going at a healthier pace.
On the other hand, if you’re a **fast oxidizer**, your body is burning through fuel way too quickly. It’s like a fire that’s raging out of control, overheating the room and running out of fuel too fast. In this case, we need to slow things down and balance your adrenal and thyroid glands, which are working too hard and will eventually burn out if not supported properly.
Why Does It Matter?
Knowing whether you're a fast or slow oxidizer is crucial because it helps us create a personalized nutrition plan that supports your body where it’s at. A fast oxidizer will need more satiating nourishment to slow things down, while a slow oxidizer might need more lean protein along with plants to fuel the body’s energy production. This isn’t just about what you eat, but how your body uses the nutrients from food.
HTMA testing shows us your current metabolic type and mineral patterns, which can also reflect how your body is handling stress. Fast oxidizers are often in a state of high stress (sympathetic dominance), while slow oxidizers might be in a more worn-out state (parasympathetic dominance).
By understanding your oxidation rate, we can make the right dietary tweaks and provide targeted supplements to help balance your energy levels, support your adrenal and thyroid health, and get your body functioning optimally again.
Mineral Ratios
How mineral balancing through HTMA gives us deeper insights into your current health through the mineral ratios that show; let me break it down for you in a simple way.
When we look at your mineral ratios through HTMA testing, we’re not just seeing individual minerals. We’re seeing how these minerals are interacting with each other, which tells us a lot about what’s happening inside your body—especially when it comes to your energy, stress response, and overall balance.
Key Mineral Ratios & What They Mean
These ratios are like a window into your metabolic state. For example, the balance between calcium and potassium shows how well your thyroid is functioning. The sodium-to-potassium ratio gives us clues about your adrenal health and how you're handling stress. If these ratios are off, it’s like getting a warning light on your car’s dashboard—you know something needs attention.
When your mineral ratios are in balance, your body is likely functioning well and handling life’s challenges with ease. But if certain ratios are too high or too low, it could mean your body is under stress, your energy is depleted, or your glands (like your adrenals and thyroid) are overworking or underperforming.
How This Helps You
By understanding these key mineral ratios, we get a clear picture of how your body is using energy, handling stress, and what areas need support. Whether your ratios show you're in a fast or slow metabolic state, we can create a plan that’s tailored to your body’s current needs. It’s all about restoring balance and helping your body work at its best—without guesswork.
With HTMA, we’re not just addressing symptoms. We’re digging deeper to understand the root causes behind what’s going on with your health, so we can nourish and support your body the right way.
This is just the beginning -there is so much more we can determine to help you on your health journey. I wanted to give you a toe dip in so you could start to understand how we can get a clearer picture than you've likely had before with a more targeted approach to help you on your health journey.
