Every season I do a focused time of 'detox' because of my past experience with overcoming decades of chronic fatigue, allergies, sinus infections, extreme bloating and gas pain, eczema and asthma.
For years I treated each symptom separately with pills, supplements, naps, heating pads -- anything that worked at the time. Then I went through a traumatic divorce. The verdict from my first HTMA: I was in total burnout. My doctor couldn’t help me recover all she ever offered me were more medications. This was when I realized there had to be a better way.
So the journey began. I detoxed my life. It wasn’t overnight and it took a lot of trial and error. The real change began when I started to understand that food did more than impact my weight; it was also a trigger for many of my aliments, cravings, moods and emotional eating.
By doing my spring detox, which is based on what I learned from many experts in the fields of health and nutrition, I have been able to use food to help me manage and overcome my conditions.
I no longer have any of those health conditions on a regular basis. I rarely have an issue with my sinuses. I have more energy than I did 10 years ago, and I no longer have asthma. Every time I feel like I need to reboot and detox, this is the program I follow and it always works.
Even those who have a super clean diet and lifestyle benefit greatly from seasonal detoxing because of modern day stressors and toxins we cannot always control. So no matter what might be your current lifestyle, health level, diet, or energy level, regular detoxification can be a very special gift to give to yourself.
Many of us set aside time to spring clean our homes, our yards, and our automobiles, yet the body is often forgotten. This is a wonderful opportunity to support your body so it may function at its full potential. I see many clients who suffer from allergies, stress, fatigue, headaches, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, weak immune systems, and skin problems. These are your body’s cries for help! It is asking for a time to rest, rejuvenate, be deeply nurtured, and “tuned up.”
Case in point...
This year is no different. As we rolled into and through March, I wasn’t feeling at my best, some of my habits were slipping quite a bit and I was feeling it in my moods, body and sleep.
I even had a minor panic that I needed all kinds of testing to rule out the terrible things that could be going on. Then I got over my little tantrum and realized that I just needed to give myself more TLC. I also need to remember I was worthy of having what I wanted for my health and life.
You see, my boyfriend and I were both feeling a little burn out. So we’d spend a lot of time on the weekends vegging out and being a little on the lazy side. This led to me skipping healthy meal prep and planning and eating more gluten free pizza, Siete grain free chips and sometimes bingeing on ice cream. I even added in an extra cup of coffee here and there and that was with added healthy sweetener. I wasn't moving my body as much as I knew felt best for me either. Sure, I could have blamed it on the weather but I know better than that. I'm never a victim. I always have choice in my own self-care.
I also wasn't focusing on my meditation practice as well as I could. I realized this when he and I went to do our March float. I couldn't stay in the tank for the full 75 minutes, because I could not relax. I was SO tense. This was a big red flag for me.
All this led to me feeling lower energy a little bit of the ‘is winter over yet blues’. I even struggled with some mild anxiety.
My sleep struggled a few nights a week. And my belly felt distended and uncomfortable all the time. I got a pretty severe headache around my cycle and some cramps too. Stuff that I had once overcome was creeping back in. I knew what I had to do. I had to love myself enough to take personal responsibility and do exactly what I already knew I needed to do. No more excuses, big girl panties on, boss-bitch-mode full throttle.
So, I did my own 3 day kidney cleanse. Upped my movement game -then shifted into my spring detox. I didn’t even do it ‘perfectly’. Within 1 week, I started to feel GREAT again. Lighter, freer, sleeping better and lost 4 inches around my waist. My energy levels came back and I felt stable, with less anxiety.
So, even those of us who are in the health profession need the same support and reminders as the rest of the population.
You see, I use all my own strategies that I teach my clients and I often need a reboot, aka "kick in the pants" to shift me back to the best version of myself possible. So much of what I needed was first a mindset shift so I could act out how I truly own my worth.
You deserve to feel your very best and you can. You are meant to keep growing and thrive.
You just have to give yourself permission to push past the fear of any discomfort the changes you need to make may create. And remember that if you want to create change you have to do something differently and get out of your comfort zone. After all comfort zones are not growth zones.
You can focus all your energy on fighting what you don't like or want, or on resisting change. If you choose that path you will not move toward what you actually do want for your health and life. I got pretty stuck in my own resistance for a bit that it accumulated in my body and mood. It wasn't pretty.
As soon as I shifted my energy to focus on my growth, everything changed. The truth is, it wasn't even hard. It was harder holding on to the resistance than it was to actually take the right actions to improve how I was feeling.
The key to growth is to focus all your energy on what you do want, instead of what you don't want. The amount of energy is likely the same but the results you get are far greater. This requires you speak kindly to yourself, believe in yourself and dial into your vision of what you DO WANT for your life and health!
