The transition into late fall and winter can feel abrupt, especially with the diminishing light. For many, this time of year brings a rush of activities, fueled by marketing pressures that start earlier each season. Personally, I’ve stepped back from this hectic cycle, and I often marvel at how I once navigated it without losing my sense of self. Can anyone relate?
If you have kids, school is in full swing, and the holidays are just around the corner. Work often feels like a crunch to get everything done before the year ends. I’ve noticed a similar busy vibe with many of my clients lately.
This cycle of busyness is familiar, but this year feels particularly stressful with everything happening in the world—illness, global challenges, and an overarching sense of anxiety. We’re entering a busy season on top of an already high-stress baseline.
The Importance of Slowing Down
Excess stress is a silent destroyer, impacting our health in numerous ways. It’s essential to acknowledge how overstimulated our lives have become. I loved this line from a song I recently heard, “I will only go as fast as the slowest part of me feels safe to go.” A reminder that we need to listen to our bodies and prioritize our well-being.
The Buzz Around the Nervous System
The term "nervous system" is trending, but let’s not reduce it to just buzzwords. It’s vital to understand the underlying reasons we turn to these concepts. While nervous system support is crucial, we must also address the root causes of our stress, particularly in modern life, which often disconnects us from nature.
While there are many "nervous system hacks" available, they can’t replace the minerals our bodies need for recovery. To truly heal, we must reconnect with nature and replenish our bodies with the necessary nutrients.
Podcast Insights
In this episode, I explore practical tips for navigating the holiday season with intention.
I want to share a perspective from a recent newsletter that resonates with our journey toward rewilding and honoring our human biology:
“Humans are mammals. At a cellular level, we share much with other animals, and our biology is programmed to slow down during the cold, dark months. We are meant to rest, reduce our activity, and find comfort during this time. So why do we fill this season with busyness? It crept up on us, overshadowing the natural rhythms of life.
Historically, winter was a time for gathering, storytelling, and meaningful repairs—both in our homes and within ourselves. It was a slower pace focused on connection and restoration, not the frenetic activity we often see today. Our cultural expectations have shifted away from simplicity and rest, leaving us feeling the pressure to maintain traditions that no longer serve us.
As we approach this busy season, let’s consider how we can create new traditions that allow for rest and repair. It’s okay to prioritize time for ourselves and to let go of some pressures. Allowing time for rest is not just beneficial for us—it can also ease the burden on our loved ones.”
Nourishing Ways to Repair and Rebuild
Now, let’s talk about nourishment—not stimulants. Remember, REMINERALIZING your body is a marathon, not a sprint.
1. Connect with Nature: Find a quiet spot in the woods or a nearby natural setting to walk slowly or simply sit and be. Forest bathing is more than a trend; it’s a vital practice for our well-being. As Arthur Haines highlights in *A New Path*, those who spend time in forests experience lower stress levels and enhanced immune function. Nature has profound healing properties that we should embrace.
2. Embrace Rest: Allow yourself to sleep late (or go to bed early), take naps, and enjoy peaceful moments without the pressure to be productive. This time of year, our bodies crave rest, and it’s essential to honor that need.
By shifting our focus from the chaos of the season to nurturing our well-being, we can truly embrace the spirit of repair and rebuilding. Let’s prioritize what matters and create space for rest and connection with ourselves and others.
Nourishing Your Body for Balance and Resilience
In today’s fast-paced world, immersing ourselves in nature is more essential than ever. We thrive in complex landscapes filled with dynamic shapes, patterns, and textures, and exposure to the sights, sounds, and scents of wild places can significantly enhance our well-being. Research shows that connecting with nature can improve health, boost immune function, enhance cognitive abilities, foster creativity, and elevate emotional well-being.
When it comes to nutrition, it’s crucial to focus on what sustains us rather than just what gives us a quick boost. During busy, stressful seasons, prioritize nutrients—especially minerals—that provide long-lasting energy. Think of your body as needing reserves; you want to ensure there’s something left in the tank.
Key Nutrients to Support Your Well-Being
Vitamin C
Since our bodies can’t produce vitamin C, we must obtain it from our diet. This vital nutrient supports adrenal hormone production, particularly cortisol. Chronic stress can lead to burnout from excess hormone production, making us more susceptible to colds and flu. I have an entire post dedicated to vitamin C, detailing sources, dosages, and its importance—especially during the colder months. HERE is one of my favorite food based supplements & here is my full blog tutorial on vitamin c.
Magnesium
Often referred to as the “ultimate chill pill,” magnesium supports heart health, the nervous system, and energy production. This isn't the quick energy of caffeine; it’s about achieving steady, clean energy. Every client I work with receives guidance on incorporating magnesium into their diet, as it’s a mineral we tend to deplete quickly. Ideally, we should consume 5-7 mg of magnesium per pound of body weight daily. Unfortunately, modern water sources often lack sufficient minerals, making intentional dietary choices essential. If you haven’t yet focused on magnesium, now is the time to start. Grab my 'Magic of Magnesium Starter Kit' HERE.
Salt & Potassium
These key electrolytes are often misunderstood but are crucial for sustaining energy. Proper balance is vital, so be sure to check out my electrolyte recipe for tips on getting these right. Try my homemade electrolyte recipe HERE.
Digestive Support
Supporting digestion is essential, especially during busy times. Consider incorporating bitters or raw apple cider vinegar into your routine to aid digestive health. Grab some bitters HERE.
Sleep
As darkness falls, it signals the body’s need for rest. While it may be tempting to stay up late during festive seasons, honoring your body’s natural rhythms is crucial for breaking free from stress cycles. Prioritizing sleep can significantly improve your resilience.
These foundational nutrients are just a starting point.
